Why Your Pocket Money Might Not Buy a Treehouse (and Why That Matters for Billericay!)
Hello everyone! It’s Mark Readings here, your local property guide for CM11 1.
I’ve just been reading some news that’s making a lot of noise today. A big group called Shelter Cymru (they help people who have worries about where they live) just shared a story about a lady who earns £36,000 a year. Now, that sounds like a huge mountain of pennies, right? But even with all that money, she’s finding it impossible to buy her own home or even find a place to rent that doesn't gobble up all her cash.
Basically, the "price tags" on houses have grown so fast that they’re like giant sunflowers towering over our heads, while the money people earn is growing more like little blades of grass.
Is the "Piggy Bank" Broken?
Think of it like this: Imagine you’ve been saving your pocket money for a special Lego set. Every week you put a pound in your jar. But every time you walk past the toy shop, the shopkeeper has added £5 to the price! No matter how hard you save, the Lego set gets further away.
That is what’s happening in Wales, and honestly, we are seeing the same thing right here in our neck of the woods in Billericay and Crays Hill.
Did you know? In some parts of the UK, if you saved every single penny you earned and didn't buy a single chocolate bar or even a pair of socks, it would still take you over 100 years to buy a house in cash!
What does this mean for YOU?
You might be thinking, "Mark, I already own my house, why should I care?" or "I'm just a student, I've got years to go!"
- For the Homeowners: If houses are too expensive for people to buy, it means more people have to rent. When lots of people want to rent the same house, the price to live there goes up. This makes your house feel very valuable, but it can be a "sad victory" if your own children or grandchildren can't afford to live in the same town as you.
- For the Buyers: It’s a bit of a scramble! You have to be "match-fit." This means having your piggy bank ready and your paperwork tidy before you even start looking at gardens and kitchens.
- For the Sellers: Your house is like a rare golden ticket. Because there aren't many houses available, people are willing to move very fast to get yours.
The CM11 1 View: Our Little Bubble
Here in CM11 1, we are in a very popular spot. We’ve got great schools and the train station isn't far away. Because everyone wants to live here, our "price tags" stay high.
Strange but true: Did you know that back in the 1970s, the average house cost about the same as three brand-new cars? Today, in our area, a house can cost as much as twenty or thirty brand-new cars! That shows you just how much "growing" the house prices have done compared to everything else.
My Honest Advice
I’ve been doing this a long time, and here is what I think: The "old ways" of buying a home are changing. We are seeing more "Team Buying"—where friends or siblings put their money together to buy one house, rather than trying to do it alone.
If you’re feeling a bit worried by the news, don’t be. The property market is like a giant seesaw. Right now, it’s tilted very high, but it always finds a way to balance out eventually.
My top tip: If you want to move, don't wait for a "magic day" when prices drop. Instead, focus on what you can afford comfortably without having to give up your Friday night pizza. A home should be a place of happy memories, not a source of tummy-aches about money!
